A través del establecimiento de meticulosas y obsesivas metodologías de búsqueda, recolección, selección, clasificación, catalogación y manipulación de materiales por demás heterogéneos, el trabajo de Gabriel de la Mora explora la finitud y la permanencia, el paso del tiempo, la suspensión del mismo, y la transformación tanto dela materia como de la energía. Los materiales con los que el artista lleva tales ideas al límite provienen de un contexto cotidiano e inmediato, buena parte de ellos podrían incluso ser calificados como desechos: elementos naturales, artefactos y antigüedades, partes de máquinas que han devenido obsoletas, objetos utilitarios cuya función ha sido cancelada y diferentes elementos arquitectónicos. Los resultados abarcan distintos formatos y suelen jugar con las nociones preestablecidas de dibujo, pintura y escultura.Caracterizados por su potencia visual, estos cuerpos de obra complican a la vez distintos términos teóricos e históricos del arte (el ready-made, el objet trouvé, el monocromo, la pintura al aire libre), ironizan la estética minimalista y abstracta, e indagan sobre la naturaleza sempiternamente cambiante de lo pictórico. Por ejemplo, ¿puede la pintura originarse con el paso del tiempo y sin la intervención del artista? Esta aparente negación de la pintura y otros cuestionamientos ontológicos formulados por el cuerpo de obra de De la Mora se extienden a la creación artística en general: ¿cuándo surge y cuándo concluye la obra de arte? ¿Cuál es la función del artista dentro de este acto? De la mano de procesos metódicos y disciplinados en igual medida, Gabriel de la Mora ha constituido una práctica en la cual el rol del artista es resignificado: su labor no es crear ni destruir, simplemente transformar.
Gabriel de la Mora nació el 23 de septiembre de 1968 en la Ciudad de México, donde vive y trabaja actualmente. Cuenta con una Maestría en Pintura (2001-2003) por Pratt Institute, NY y con la Licenciatura en Arquitectura (1987-1991) por la Universidad Anáhuac del Norte, Ciudad de México. Ha sido becario Fulbright-García Robles, de la Fundación Jacques y Natasha Gelman, y miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores (2013-2015) del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes-FONCA.

At their core, creating and looking at works of art are acts of care, from the artist’s labor to the viewer’s contemplation and appreciation. Storage, conservation, and display are also ways of tending to art. This exhibition invites visitors to explore how contemporary artists trace and address concepts of care through their materials, subjects, ideas, and processes.
More than 100 works from the MFA’s collection—including recent acquisitions and objects that have never been on view before—define, depict, and demonstrate many forms of care through five thematic groupings: threads, thresholds, rest, vibrant matter, and adoration. Gisela Charfauros McDaniel’s portrait of her mother, Tiningo’ si Sirena (2021), moves between intimacy and an attentiveness to larger concepts that are meaningful to the artist, like cultural inheritances and ecological interconnectivity. For his Sound Suit (2008), Nick Cave extended the lifespan of discarded objects by transforming them into a surreal, otherworldly costume that asserts the value of Black life. The intensive time and labor that goes into creating textiles and fiber art is evident in examples by Sheila Hicks, Howardena Pindell, and Jane Sauer. Through these works and many others visitors can consider how different forms of care may inspire new models for living and feeling—now and in the future.

The Aspen Art Fair at the Hotel Jerome and 74tharts are thrilled to present A Place for Us, an expansive group preview exhibition curated by Laura Smith Sweeney of LSS Art Advisory. Opening on June 25th, the show features artworks by 12 artists working in a variety of media, from pulped law textbooks to blown glass.
